About the Privacy Impact Checklist

The Privacy Impact Checklist is a template checklist designed for use in Australia for businesses to use to assess the privacy risk of information that is collected or proposed to be collected by the business with respect to individuals.

This checklist:

·       requires you to complete table in part 1 by identifying the personal information your business collects and breaking it down into categories;

·       the categories in Part 1 (ie each row in the table) then must be ‘tested’ by applying each of the questions in Part 2 of the checklist;

·       is a general template drafted for Australian laws and does not incorporate unique information that you might require if you offer particularly specialised services or products; and

·       is not a substitute for specific legal advice about privacy issues, but it is a tool that may be able to assist you to identify the issues that need to be remedied if used correctly.

With the growing increase in privacy data breaches and the Privacy report and changes to the Privacy Act, it is more important than ever to get on the front foot and assess the privacy impact your businesses collection of information has.
