6 Tips from Mim Jenkinson to protect online course content

Mim Jenkinson is a digital marketer who sells a range of online products that include online courses, memberships and webinars.

Through her business, ‘Love from Mim’, she empowers busy women to get creative and have fun with planning and organisation.

In the past 12 months, Mim has sold over 1000 courses online to women around the globe.

One of first priorities Mim had was ensuring that her intellectual property (IP), her students and her business, were protected legally and had complete clarity about the information shared in her courses and their individual responsibilities around that.

Mim worked with us to put the following in place:

  • Terms of Service for her online courses;

  • Terms of Use for her website;

  • a Privacy Policy; and

  • She registered a trademark to protect her brand/

By having these things in place, it means she is protecting herself, her course and her students.

Mim shared that these areas were the most important for her to define:

1.     Personal responsibility of students

Mim strives to deliver quality content that will make her student’s lives easier and help them have fun by getting creative with planning and organisation. And let me tell you, it’s great content. But….

it’s up to each individual student to dive into the content and put the lessons learned into practice which means Mim can’t guarantee they will become the next Marie Kondo. So we worked with Mim to put disclaimers in place that let her students know that their success is in their hands.

2.     Website Terms and Privacy Policy

We put together these policies that specifically addressed Mim’s digital product offering and website content, giving her peace of mind that her IP, and her student’s needs, were protected.

3.     The course platform she chose wasn’t owned by Mim

Her courses are housed on Kajabi, a digital product platform. Mim raves about Kajabi and the benefits, but while Mim owns her course content, she doesn’t own Kajabi and has no control over it, such as the content not being available or the site going down or disappearing all together.

Things like this needed to be made clear to her students before they enrolled. And Mim needs to be aware of this and save back ups and have a Plan B if something happens to Kajabi.

4.     Copying was a no-go

Although Mim has complete trust in her students, she still needed to ensure that they were clear that copying wasn’t allowed and that her copyright and moral rights were protected.

The online Terms Mim now has clearly and easily lays out these expectations to her future and current students.

5.     Getting paid

Mim recently launched payment plans and a membership with recurring payments and essentially, she wanted to ensure that she got paid!

The terms we put in place decrease the risk to Mim of payments not being made.

6.     Expectations and rules

When it comes to Mim’s online groups, commenting and communities, it was important to her that her students felt safe and are always clear on what is expected. Her students are clear about the rules they must adhere to and how these rules protect them too.

Mim can now focus on doing what she does best: creating and teaching content that changes the lives of her students!

She has peace of mind that her, her content and IP and the needs of her students are protected.

I’ll have what she’s having….

Mim is pretty inspirational and a good example of someone kicking goals in the online course world but also protecting her business.
